The enhanced premium tax credits that had held down marketplace health insurance costs since 2021 expired at the end of last year. They were not extended and they were not replaced. A House bill passed in January by a vote of 230 to 196 and stopped in the Senate, and a bipartisan negotiation over a two year extension did not produce a law. Subsidy rules reverted to the pre-2021 formula on the first of January.

The group absorbing most of this is specific and easy to overlook: people who retired somewhere in their early sixties and have to buy their own coverage until Medicare starts at 65\. Americans between 50 and 64 make up roughly a third of marketplace enrollment, enrollment peaks at age 64, and this cohort is about half of everyone in the individual market with income above the old subsidy limit. They are the people for whom the change is not a percentage but a cliff.

My name is Porter Stansberry.

I'm the founder of one of the largest independent financial research firms in the world. Over the last 30 years we've helped hundreds of thousands of Americans navigate almost every major economic cycle.

We've been on the forefront of every big financial story – from the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to the rise of Bitcoin, the COVID inflation surge, and the artificial intelligence revolution.

But today, I need to [expose a story](https://click.milmkt.com/stwa/1C33332?ref=millionaire-marketing.ghost.io) the likes of which we haven't seen in half a century.

In fact, the last – and only – time this happened was 1974\. A secret deal struck in a Saudi desert that quietly determined the financial fate of an entire generation of Americans.

It created extraordinary wealth for some, while casting millions more into relative poverty.

[Now, 52 years later, it's happening again.](https://click.milmkt.com/stwa/1C33332?ref=millionaire-marketing.ghost.io)

And as you'll see, the aftershock of this event could reset not just your personal wealth, but the entire foundation of the U.S. dollar.

How you save, how you invest, how you protect everything you've built… it's all being reshaped by what Fortune calls *"the biggest change to the world's relationship with the dollar"* in a generation.

Yet almost nobody is prepared for it.

So if you've been watching the chaos of the past year unfold, struggling to make sense of it all – you're about to get [the answers you've been searching for.](https://click.milmkt.com/stwa/1C33332?ref=millionaire-marketing.ghost.io)

Everything from the government taking direct equity stakes in tiny mining companies… to Trump's obsession with Greenland… his strange deals with Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman and Mark Zuckerberg… the re-opening of shuttered nuclear plants… and a $12 billion stockpile of obscure metals most Americans have never heard of…

It's all deeply and inexorably connected to an inescapable fact no-one has prepared you for:

[Trump is replacing the dollar.](https://click.milmkt.com/stwa/1C33332?ref=millionaire-marketing.ghost.io)

His shocking money reset has bypassed all conventional channels – enacted instead through a series of executive orders, bi-lateral deals and a landmark treaty signed by 13 nations in December 2025 (barely reported in the press) called [Pax Silica.](https://click.milmkt.com/stwa/1C33332?ref=millionaire-marketing.ghost.io)

You need to know that the financial decisions you make in the face of Trump's New Dollar could dictate whether you're enriched, or quietly impoverished by the seismic shift already underway.

The stocks to buy. The assets to avoid. And the critical moves our research indicates you should make to ensure you and your family end up on the right side of this once-in-a-generation wealth divide…

[It's all laid out here for you in my important new briefing.](https://click.milmkt.com/stwa/1C33332?ref=millionaire-marketing.ghost.io)

### Why Age Concentrates the Damage

Two features of the individual market multiply against each other here. The first is age rating. Insurers may charge an older adult up to three times what they charge a 21-year-old for the identical plan, and the federal age curve is explicit: the factor is 1.000 at 21, 2.714 at 60, and hits the statutory ceiling of 3.000 at 64\. Nothing about the plan changes. The price simply triples across a working lifetime.

The second is that the subsidy used to absorb that slope and no longer does. National average unsubsidized premiums this year for a 60-year-old run about 11,625 dollars annually for a bronze plan and 15,914 for a silver. At those prices, whether a household qualifies for help is not a detail of the budget. It is the budget.

### The Mechanics of a Cliff Rather Than a Slope

Under the enhanced rules, nobody paid more than 8.5 percent of income for a benchmark plan, no matter how high the income went. Under the restored rules, eligibility stops entirely at 400 percent of the federal poverty level. Not a taper, a stop. For 2026 coverage that line sits at 84,600 dollars for a two person household and 62,600 for one person.

Planners have modeled the edge. For a retired couple in their early sixties, income of 84,600 dollars produces a premium increase of roughly 100 dollars a month. Income of 84,601 dollars produces an increase of roughly 1,100 dollars a month, about 12,000 dollars a year, because the entire credit disappears at once.

What makes this a live operational problem rather than a theoretical one is that early retirees choose much of their own income. A Roth conversion, a realized capital gain, a few months of consulting work. A couple can convert a substantial amount to a Roth and realize a large long term gain while owing no federal income tax at all, and still generate modified adjusted gross income far above the line. The binding constraint is not the tax bracket. It is the income figure the marketplace uses.

### The Bill That Comes at Filing

The second change is less discussed and sharper. Advance credits are paid monthly on an estimate and reconciled on the tax return. Until this year, a household that underestimated its income repaid only part of the excess, because statutory caps limited the clawback by income band. The July 2025 tax law removed those caps for tax years after 2025\. The tax agency's own guidance now states that the taxpayer must repay the full amount by which advance payments exceeded the credit actually earned.

So a couple who estimated 82,000 dollars in January, took the credit all year and finished at 85,000 because of a December distribution repays all of it, and the bill arrives at filing, months after the money is spent. Reconciliation is mandatory, and skipping it forfeits eligibility in future years.

### What Is Still Adjustable

The market is repricing around all of this. Effectuated enrollment fell from 22.3 million last year toward a projected 17.5 million, average monthly premium payments rose 58 percent, and the share of enrollees choosing bronze plans went from 30 percent to 40\. Insurers have proposed a median increase of 15 percent for 2027 on top of this year's 20 percent, attributing roughly four points of each to a risk pool that got sicker as healthy people left.

*Every other cost in an early retiree's budget scales with income, and this one is an on-off switch tripped by a single dollar in the last week of December.* Two habits handle most of the risk. Know the exact dollar figure of the 400 percent line for the household size before making any discretionary income decision in the fourth quarter, since conversions and sales are timing choices in a way premiums are not. And update the marketplace application mid-year when income changes, which adjusts the advance payments going forward and is cheaper than discovering the gap at filing.
